Genie d'Apollon (Genie of Apollo). Cherub in Chariot.

Genie d'Apollon (Genie of Apollo). Cherub in Chariot.

by Vanni, Niccolo

Apollo's Genie in a chariot pulled by Griffins.

Putti and cherubs featured frequently in ancient decorative arts. This charming, dramatic small image of a cherub and a chariot stands out beautifully against its black background. (The other in the pair is the next image.)

Reproduction of a cherub and chariot, from a copperplate engraving by Vanni of a fresco unearthed following the excavations of Herculaneum, a Roman municipium buried when Mt Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. Le Antichita di Ercolano Esposto (Herculaneum Antiquities Exposed) was the most important recording of 18th century archaelogical discoveries from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae over a period of 40 years. It was published in Naples between 1757 and 1792 (under the patronage of King Charles II).

Image is 13.5 x 19 cm (5.25 x 7.5 inches). Print paper size is 18 x 22.5cm (7 x 8.75 inches)
