Australian Banksia Serrata in flower with Pericarpium (seed pod)

Australian Banksia Serrata in flower with Pericarpium (seed pod)

by Wilkes, J.

Heritage Editions Banksia Serrata in Bloom with Seed Pod... the ripe Pericarpium, with the capsules open.

Reproduction printed from one of the finest Banksia illustrations ever published - reproduced from a hand-coloured copperplate engraving by J. Pass for Governor Arthur Phillip's account of “The Voyage to Botany Bay” First Fleet engravings originally published in London circa 1807 by John Wilkes.

First published in 1789 by John Stockdale, The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay; with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island included many plants, birds and animals that had not been previously recorded. This lovely illustration has more character than most of the other banksias because it shows both the flower and the seed pod after the flower is finished, with the serrated-edged leaves also showing a little less bouyant.

The page measures 31 x 25cm (12 1/4 x 9 7/8 inches). The size of the printed image is 25 x 19cm (9 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches).
