John Gould Australian Parakeet, Orange-Bellied Grass Parrakeet Euphema Auranta print

by Gould, John

John Gould Heritage Editions parrot print, Grass Parrakeet. Euphema Aurantia is an Australian Parakeet threatened with extinction.

Reproduction print from a hand-coloured lithograph by Elizabeth Gould "from nature and on stone" (the stone being a lithographic plate) for Birds of Australia by English naturalist and ornithologist John Gould, known as 'the Bird Man'.

Gould combined an eye for detail with business acumen, and with the assistance of his artist wife Elizabeth and other bird lithographers illustrated the birds of the different regions of the world. By obtaining wealthy subscribers to each venture, John Gould published superb hand-coloured lithograph that have not been surpassed to this day.

While many people have heard of John Gould, fewer know that his wife Elizabeth drew and lithographed around 600 illustrations of birds for her husband's grand publications - and died following the birth of their eighth child after their return from Australia.
