John Gould Australian Bittern, Ardetta flavicollis reproduction print.

by Gould, John

John Gould Bittern print. Lansdowne reproduction from lithograph by Henry Constantine Richter for The Birds of Australia by John Gould, published in London between 1840 and 1848.

Known as 'the Bird Man', John Gould was a naturalist whose passion was the field of ornithology. With subscribers funds he was able to employ the finest lithographers whom he apparently paid well and supervised closely as he had a good eye for detail. His artist wife Elizabeth refined his field sketches and notation and also did over 600 of the lithographs. She was encouraged and coached by the great bird artist, Edward Lear, who was scientific illustrator at the London Zoological Museum where John Gould was curator.

Approximately 53 x 35cm (21 x 14 inches) in good condition, the paper is not as thick as the original lithographs, and the ink colours do not have the same longevity as early colour. We recommend framing with conservation material and U/V protective glass.
