Australian Banksia Ericafolia. Reproduction Curtis botanical print

Australian Banksia Ericafolia. Reproduction Curtis botanical print

by Curtis, William

Heritage Editions reproduction print, Australian Heath-leaved Banksia Ericafolia. This print was enlarged and printed from a hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Francis Sansom after the drawing by Sydenham Edwards (1768-1819) for Curtis's Botanical Magazine: or Flower Garden Displayed. William Curtis discovered the skilful botanical illustration of Welsh artist Sydenham Teast Edwards (1768-1819) and employed him in London.

From 1788 to 1815 Sydenham Edwards was almost the sole artist for Curtis's Botanical Magazine which was begun in 1787 by William Curtis to illustrate plants from around the world as the specimens were received and cultivated in Britain. This tradition has continued for over 230 years. Today the publication is known as Kew Magazine (for Kew Gardens in London), and is produced by the Royal Horticultural Society.

One of 6 banksia prints in the Heritage Editions range, this is one of 12 Curtis botanical illustrations that were printed a little larger than the original engravings. As with all artwork (and in particular modern prints) we recommend conservation framing and U/V glass to block ultraviolet rays and prevent fading.

Paper size is 33 x 25.5cm (13 x 10 inches).
