Australian marsupial, Koala with Young. John Gould print.

by Gould, John

Heritage Editions print of John Gould Phascolarctos Cinereus.

Large reproduction print from a hand-coloured lithograph by Henry Constantine Richter from the drawing by John Gould (1804-1881) for Gould’s “Mammals of Australia” published in London between 1845 and 1863 by Hullmandel and Walton.

In the 19th century, John Gould was an English naturalist and astute business man. We are fortunate that he travelled with his wife to Australia to illustrate our wildlife. With the assistance of his artist wife Elizabeth and other fine natural history lithographers illustrated the birds of the different regions of the world and the unfamiliar mammals of Australia in large hand-coloured lithographs. By obtaining wealthy subscribers prior to each venture, John Gould was able to publish these superb illustrations in grand publications that have not been surpassed to this day.

Unfortunately this print is too large for our scanner. The digital picture does not do it justice. Approximate Size: 535 x 370 mm ( 21 x 14.5 inches).
