Half-price PAIR. Tallis Eastern and Western Hemispheres MAPS

by John Tallis & Company

These 2 John Tallis maps of the world c1853 are probably the most heavily embellished maps ever printed. They are beautifully colour-printed reproductions from a wonderful pair of hand-coloured antique steel-engraved map by John Tallis & Company.

Among the last decorative map publishers, Tallis and Company surpassed themselves with the embellishment of these maps. The map is surrounded by small vignette engravings of people and native fauna of the regions shown, with each image separated and further adorned by the intertwining of vines.

The publishing firm of Tallis flourished from 1835 to 1860, and were renowned for their fine steel-engraved maps and prints. Tallis maps were among the last decorative maps published. All their maps were adorned by finely engraved decorative borders, with a selection of small scenes of cities, people, fauna or flora of the region.

These very decorative maps are beautiful together in one frame.. or of course in individual frames, side by side or one above the other. The maps are the same size as each other: 28 x 36cm (11 x 14 inches).
