by Jones, Inigo

Whitehall Royal Palace architectural elevations by Inigo Jones (c1638).

This matching pair of long Inigo Jones architecture prints on high quality paper is difficult to show in the space available. Fine Heritage Vintage Prints reproduced from hand-coloured copperplate engravings by Henrik Hulsbergh after the drawings by Henry Flitcroft of the architectural designs by Inigo Jones (1573-1652). Originally published in London c1715-1767 by Colen Campbell. Known as 'the father of classical English architecture', Inigo Jones believed that strict mathematical proportion should control plan, elevation, and every other detail of construction.

From 1530 to 1698, the Royal Palace at Whitehall was the main London royal residence. With over 1,500 rooms it was the largest palace in Europe in 1698 when it was destroyed by fire. Only the Banqueting House survived. From 1605 Inigo Jones was theatrical designer and architect for the royal courts of James I and Charles II, and royal surveyor general from 1615. He studied Palladian style of architecture during 2 trips to Italy. Inigo Jones architectural commissions included 'the Actors' Church', St Paul’s Church in Bedford Street, Covent Garden (destroyed by fire and since restored) and the Covent Garden Italian-style piazza (also now much-altered).

Paper size of each is 445 x 985mm (17.1/2 x 38.3/4 inches).
