Tallis South Australia hand-coloured Heritage Editions map, from c1851

Tallis South Australia hand-coloured Heritage Editions map, from c1851

by John Tallis & Company

Tallis map of Part of South Australia is the most decorative map ever done of South Australia.

This map was originally published by Tallis & Company circa 1851 and showed the region that had been settled at that time.
The publishing firm of Tallis flourished from 1835 to 1860, and were renowned for their fine steel-engraved maps and prints which were embellished with finely engraved decorative borders and small scenes (known as vignettes) related to the main subject. Tallis maps were among the last decorative maps published, as the skilled engraving work became uneconomical.

The small decorative engravings have been hand-tinted with watercolour. This map is also available black and white (next listing). Map size: 28 x 36 cm (14 x 11 inches)
