Heritage Editions Australia Map. Bowen's Hollandia Nova - Terra Australis (c1744)

Sold

by Bowen, Emanuel

Numbered Limited Edition print of the first English-published map by Bowen, showing Australia by itself and not as part of a world map or map of Asia or the Pacific.

One of 750 Limited Edition Heritage Editions prints of Emanuel Bowen's copperplate-engraved map as published in 1744. Bowen's map was an English version of the 1664 map published by the French traveller and author of interesting discoveries, Melchisedec Thevenot.

This chart of Australia is especially interesting because of the captions Bowen added in the areas where land had not been discovered. These two blocks of text emphasize the care taken when transposing the information available at that time, and what exploration was being undertaken during the period. This map of Australia was published 26 years prior to Captain Cook's charting of the east coast; in his search for the 'great south land'.

Size of this map to its border is 46 x 59 cm (18 x 23.25 inches). Print size is 52 x 65 cm.

[This Limited Edition chart is also available (listed above) as printed, in black and white.]
