South Brisbane from the North Shore, Moreton Bay, Australia.

by Baines, Thomas

Thomas Baines oil painting 1855, reproduced in 1985 by the National Australia Bank.

Looking towards the cliffs at Kangaroo Point, from the junction of Merivale and Ernest Streets, South Brisbane, looking towards North Quay. On the left is the first temporary wooden bridge before its destruction by marine borer, and collapse in 1867. The foreground Presbyterian church was in Grey Street.

Reproduction print of the rarely seen image by Thomas Baines. Explorer/artist Thomas Baines (1820-1875) painted this scene in oils, despite not having been to Brisbane during his time in Australia. (Armytage did not come to Australia at all.)
A photograph was most likely supplied to them by Richard Daintree, Agent-General for Queensland in London from 1872.

 Image 15 x 21cm (5 7/8 x 8 1/4 inches). Paper size 24 x 25cm (approximately 9 1/2 x 9 7/8 inches).
