Fine reproduction S.T. Gill Melbourne colonial view.
Reproduction print from a steel engraving by James Tingle after the sketch by Samuel Thomas Gill (1818-1880) for Victoria Illustrated published Melbourne circa 1856. At 21, S.T. Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck on the goldfields but had more success with his character studies of life on the goldfields. He then moved to Victoria to draw and paint colonial life in Australia. Gill engravings are among the finest records of early Australia. He was skilled in portraying the hardships and victories on the goldfields, and life in the young colony in the mid-19th century.
