In 79 CE excavations in the regions south of Naples  (including Herculaneum, Pompeii and Stabiae) uncovered fabulous wall frescoes that had been painted thousands of years earlier in Roman times. Illustrations of the discoveries were drawn, engraved and printed for the greatest 18th century archaeological work, Le Antichita di Ercolano Esposto (Herculaneum Antiquities Exposed), published in Naples between 1757 and 1792. Some of the illustrations indicate where the paint was damaged.
