John Gould Pied Cormorant, Phalacrocorax melanoleucus print.

by Gould, John

John Gould Phalacrocorax melanoleucus Australian Pied Cormorant print. Lansdowne reproduction from a hand-coloured lithograph by Henry Constantine Richter for The Birds of Australia by John Gould, published in London between 1840 and 1848.

Known as 'the Bird Man', John Gould was a naturalist whose passion was the field of ornithology. Showing great business acumen, Gould obtained subscribers for each of his grand publications and employed, paid well, and closely monitored, the fine lithographers, including his artist wife Elizabeth Gould who also refined her husband's field sketches for the lithographs - which are some of the finest illustrations ever done.

Young scientific illusterator at the London Zoological Museum while John Gould was curator, Edward Lear also loved birds. He coached Elizabeth Gould with her lithography, and finished those that were not completed when she died, having done over 600 lithographs for her husband's grand publications and given birth to their eighth child.

In good condition, approximately 35 x 53cm (14 x 21inches). The paper is not as thick as the original lithographs, and the ink colours do not have the same longevity as early colour. We recommend framing with conservation material and U/V protective glass.
