John Gould Australian Oyster-catcher, Haematopus fuliginosus bird print.

by Gould, John

John Gould Haematopus fuliginosus Oyster Catcher. Lansdowne print.

Reproduced in 1974 from a hand-coloured lithograph by Henry Constantine Richter for The Birds of Australia by John Gould, originally published in London between 1840 and 1848.

Known as 'the Bird Man', John Gould was a naturalist whose passion was the field of ornithology. He obtained wealthy subscribers for his grand publications to enable him to employ fine lithographers whom he paid well and supervised closely - including his artist wife, Elizabeth, who refined her husband's field sketches for the lithographers and did over 600 of the lithographs. While John Gould was curator at the London Zoological Museum Edward Lear was employed there as a scientific artist. He also was passionate about birds and coached Elizabeth Gould in her lithography. Elizabeth died after their return to England from Australia, following the birth of their eighth child. Edward Lear completed her unfinished lithographs.

Approximately 53 x 35cm (21 x 14 inches) in good condition, the paper is not as thick as the original lithographs, and the ink colours do not have the same longevity as early colour. We recommend framing with conservation material and U/V protective glass.
