John Gould Australian Cormorant print. Phalacrocorax leucagaster print.

by Gould, John

Gorgeous composition of Cormorants with fish - and without.

Phalacrocorax leucogaste, Lansdowne reproduction print from a hand-coloured lithograph by John Gould and Henry Constantine Richter for The Birds of Australia by John Gould, published in London between 1840 and 1848.

Known as 'the Bird Man', John Gould was a naturalist whose passion was the field of ornithology. He combined his business acumen with his good eye for detail, and obtained wealthy subscribers to be able to employ the finest lithographers whom he monitored closed - as well as his artist wife Elizabeth Gould who refined most of her husband's field sketches and completed over 600 lithographs for John Gould's grand publications of birds of the world, with some of the finest illustrations ever produced for The Birds of Australia.

While most people have heard of John Gould bird prints, many do not know that his wife Elizabeth was trained in lithography by the great bird artist, Edward Lear who was a scientific illustrator at the Zoological Museum. Elizabeth died after the birth of their eighth child following their return to England from Australia. Edward Lear completed her unfinished lithographs.

Approximately 53 x 35cm (21 x 14 inches) in good condition, the paper is not as thick as the original lithographs, and the ink colours do not have the same longevity as early colour. We recommend framing with conservation material and U/V protective glass.
