John & Elizabeth Gould Budgerigar or Warbling Parakeet

by John and Elizabeth Gould

Reproduction of Elizabeth Gould Australian bird Melopsittacus Undulatus.

Between 1840 and 1848 John Gould's Birds of Australia was published with contemporary-hand-coloured lithographic illustrations. That means that each was individually watercoloured at the time of publication. John Gould published 683 hand-coloured lithographs of Australian birds - including illustrations and descriptions for 300 newly-identified Australian bird species. The superb illustrations from Gould's original publications have always been collectable - particularly here in Australia. Some of the finest of John Gould's Birds of Australia hand-coloured lithographs (worth thousands of dollars each) are framed and hanging on the walls of Parliament House in Canberra.

During more than 150 years since John Gould published the hand-coloured lithographs of the birds of Australia, many reproductions been published but none of the reproduced illustrations is hand-coloured. Also, the original hand-coloured lithographs for John Gould's major natural history works are all around the same size - 52 to 54cm x 37cm (approx 21 x 14 1/2 inches). The finest of the reproduction editions done since then are those by Hill House Publishers who were based in Melbourne and London. They photographically reproduced from John Gould's original hand-coloured lithographs, under 'exclusive licence' with the British Museum of Natural History.

This reproduction print is from the Hill House publication of John Gould's Birds of Australia. Manual numbers have been reproduced at the top of each page, and page size is 54 x 37cm (21 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches).
