The plain, strong-willed young orphan, has an unhappy childhood until she is sent as governess to the ward of a strange violent, dynamic character with whom she falls in love. In the middle of the nineteenth century when this was written, both central characters were a radical change from the conventional fiction of charming females and handsome males.
