The Aldine History of Queensland by Morrison, c1888.

by a book

The Aldine History of Queensland, illustrated, embracing sketches and portraits of her noted people; the rise and progress of her varied enterprises; and illustrations of her boundless wealth, together with maps of latest survey.
In two volumes, 1888. By W. Frederick Morrison, M.A., M.D.
Published in Sydney by The Aldine Publishing Company.
285 x 230mm (11 ¼ x 9 inches)

A very used set! Original half roan boards in poor condition. Gilt title on spine and front cover of Volume I only. Gilt page edges in excellent condition.  Internally relatively clean with age discolouration mainly to external edges of thick pages. Half the first page of Volume I is missing, and the following map of Australia is seriously creased and the spine separated. Pencil sketches on two of the (clean) illustration tissue guards, and slight damage to a couple of others, but almost all of the 60(?) illustrations are in surprisingly good, clean condition.

These books are fascinating reading. Volume I has coloured lithographs of flora, fauna, buildings and views, and sepia lithographic portraits, including the frontispiece of Captain Cook ‘discoverer of New South Wales’.
Volume II continues the history of the important regions of Queensland, and has a wonderful large section of biographies on important contributors to the early settlements and towns throughout Queensland.
