by Gwin, James

Lights were apparently acceptable distraction in 18th century fencing!

Original fine and rare copperplate engraving by Hall after a drawing by James Gwin (sometimes spelt Gwyn) (1700-1769), for the renowned fencing manual L'Ecole des Armes circa 1763. Published for Domenico Angelo who arrived in London from Italy via Paris and taught Equitation and Fencing.

This engraving is one of a pair. Plate 46 (below) shows the outcome of this duel. In very good condition, the size of this engraved plate size is 10.5 x 15 inches or (27 x 38 cm). The later hand-colour certainly adds to the decorative appeal of these wonderful engravings.
