Beautifully hand-coloured scene, wonderful character studies from Shakespeare play, "As You Like It" Act 1, Scene II.

Delicate Orlando, love challenged... Charles the Wrestler asks Oliver to dissuade his younger brother, Orlando, from wrestling.  Charles is the court wrestler and does not want to hurt - or worse, kill Orlando. Oliver is jealous of his younger brother who is loved by Rosalind, so tells Charles to do as he must.

Original fine steel engraving by Charles William Sharpe after the painting by Irish historic, literary and portrait painter and illustrator, Daniel Maclise, R.A. (1806-1870) who worked most of his life in London. Published c1868 in Art Journal.

This lovely theatrical engraving has slight damage to the page at lower left. It has been mounted between antique white conservation ragmat board and covered with cellophane, for presentation and protection until frame is chosen. Engraving size is 175 x 240mm (approx. 7 x 9.5 inches). External size for frame window is 360 x 420mm (14.1/8 x 16.11/12 inches).
