Antique print of the Italian Chitarrone, a large guitar or base lute, sometimes referred to as the Roman Theorbo. (Adorned with mother of pearl, the 5-foot (152-cm) long Venetian theorbo at left has 6 pairs of strings on the finger-board, 7 single diapason strings stretched from the upper peg-box clear of the finger-board, and 3 sound-holes with roses joined together in 'Roman' style. In the centre, the 6-foot long Venetian Chitarrone from 1608 is richly inlaid with mother of pearl, also has 3 connected roses, 6 pairs of unisons on the finger-board, and 8 diapasons above it. The right-hand Chitarrone has a finger-board bound with 13 fret for the melody strings, has 6 pairs of unisons and 7 diapasons, and a neck ornamented with chequers.

Original colour-printed lithograph by William Gibb for the first edition of “Musical Instruments - Historic, Rare and Unique” by Alfred James Hipkins (1826-1903), published in Edinburgh, circa 1888 by Adam and Charles Black. Willliam Gibb's lithographs for the first eiditon of 'Historic and Rare Instruments' by A.J. Hipkins are considered to be the finest illustrations of musical instruments ever done.

Although from a decommissioned library edition, the framing presentation of this image is not marred by the library stamp. This lithograph is mounted between antique white conservation matt-board, and covered in cellophane for protection. Page size: 405 x 295mm (approximately 16 x11.5 inches). Lithograph size: 320 x 210mm (approx. 11.5 x 8.25 inches).
