Manner of BURNING the MARTYRS in Smithfield antique print. Engraved for Chamberlain's History of London which included many interesting 18th century engravings that frequently featured controversial subjects... in this case the burning at the stake of two men who would not succumb to the ruling demand of the renunciation of other religions and adoption of the Roman catholic faith.

Original copperplate engraving by Grignion after the drawing by Wale was published in London circa 1773 for Henry Chamberlain’s History of London. A new and compleat history and survey of the cities of London and Westminster, the borough of Southwark, and parts adjacent..  This finely engraved antique print is finely embellished with an intricately engraved classical border of scrolls, vines and flowers. 

Page measures 360 x 230mm (14 x 8.5). This page is slightly soiled, the top right corner of page is missing, and conservation replair to small tear at base of page. Measurement to plate mark is 245 x 160mm (9.6 x 6.25 inches).
