Legal caricatures of judges and lawyers have always been among the most popular Vanity Fair caricatures. From 1869 to 1914 each week's London Vanity Fair magazine included a caricature and amusing anecdotes about someone who had been in the news. Most people took pride in being the victim who was satirized. Ward's legal subjects included eminent and less-well-known judges, barristers, solicitors and lawyers. The original illustrations were printed by the prominent lithographer, Vincent Brooks.

This book introduces the Vanity Fair magazine and the best-known of the artists who drew the caricatures and signed them 'Spy', Leslie Ward (1851-1922), who was knighted in 1918. These 100 English legal profession caricatures are accompanied by brief biographies at the rear of the book... informative and entertaining reading - particularly for anyone in the legal profession.

Additional shipment may be payable to cover costs to required destination.

(A selection of 39 smaller prints of Vanity Fair lithographed caricatures was published in a numbered Limited Edition gilt-embossed cream vellum-bound book in 1909. The Book of the Bench is also available in the Antiquarian Books section of this website.)
