Robert Lytton (1831-1891) completed his education abroad, studying Greek and Roman literary masterpieces and acquiring German, French and Italian languages. By the age of 18 he joined the diplomatic service as private secretary to his uncle (Sir Henry Lytton Bulwer) who was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary for Great Britain to the United States in Washington. Thus began a stellar career as a diplomat and statesman - as well as poet - with ever more responsible positions, representing Britain in New York, Florence, Paris, the Hague, St. Petersburg, Constantinople and Vienna. In 1860 at the age of 27 he was acting Consul-General in Belgrade, and returned there to mediate when Turkey bombarded Belgrade. He returned to Paris, Vienna, Copenhagen, Athens where King George had just acquired the throne, to Lisbon as chargé d'affaires from 1865 to 1868, to Madrid, Vienna, Paris, and returned to Lisbon as British Minister Plenipotentiary, until Disraeli appointed him Her Majesty's representative, Viceroy in India in 1876, at the age of 44!
