Bosey. Legal, Vanity Fair wigged lawyer caricature c1909.

by Vanity Fair

Small antique print of Frederick Albert Bosanquet, K.C. - Common Serjeant of London.

This colour-printed lithograph was selected from the Vanity Fair legal series for The Book of the Bench published in London c.1909. This popular image was reproduced in 1909 from the larger lithograph by Spy, (the pseudonym of (Sir) Leslie Ward), for Men of the Day series published in 1901.

Vanity Fair was a weekly periodical, and its caricature of a prominent person was the highlight of each issue. The series of caricatures of the legal profession have always been the most popular. 'Spy', Leslie Ward (1851-1922) was a prolific and popular caricaturist who was knighted in 1918. He was one of a select few cartoonists whose caricatures were often responsible for creating the public persona of prominent individuals who were newsworthy.

Image size is 175 x 120mm (approximately 7 x 4.75 inches). This series of images were 'tipped in' for publication (lightly attached along one side to a bound-page). This antique caricature has been mounted in 'antique white' conservation ragmat and covered with cellophane for presentation and protection.
