Tallis-bordered antique print of Sir Ralph Abercromby, Scottish soldier and politician who rose to the rank of lieutenant-general in the British Army, was appointed Governor of Trinidad, served as Commander-in-Chief of Ireland, and was noted for his services during the French Revolutionary Wars.

Original steel engraving by William Finden of Sir Ralph Abercromby (OB.1801, from the original by Hoppner, in the collection of The Honourable James Abercromby.  With a particularly elaborate finely-engraved border, this beautfiul portrait was published for Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain by John Tallis & Company, London & New York, c1850 (with later hand-colour).
