Mr Justice Stirling, colour-printed lithograph, selected from the Vanity Fair legal series for “The Book of the Bench” published in London circa 1909. This popular image was reproduced in 1909 from the 1901, slightly larger lithograph by Spy, (the pseudonym of (Sir) Leslie Ward), for "Men of the Day".

"Vanity Fair" was a weekly periodical, and its caricature of a prominent person was the highlight of each issue. who did a series of caricatures of the legal profession, and many other persons who were in the public eye. Leslie Ward (1851-1922) was a prolific and popular caricaturist who was knighted in 1918. He was one of a select few cartoonists whose caricatures were often responsible for creating the public persona of an individual.

Image size is 175 x 120mm (approximately 7 x 4.75 inches). Each of the small images in this series has been mounted in 'antique white' conservation matt board with decorative linework, and is covered in protective cellophane. External mount size is 325 x 270mm (11.3/4 x 10.5/8 inches)
