by Wissing, Willem

Antique Print of Mrs Lawson. Baroque Portrait engraving.

Beautiful portrait after the painting by Willem Wissing, also known as William Wissing (1656-1687). Stipple and steel engraving by eminent portrait engraver (Henry) Benjamin Holl (1808-1884) for series on the beauties of the court of Charles II. Published in London circa 1838, with fine later hand-colour.

Wissing was a Dutch artist who, in 1676, moved to London and studied with and worked for Sir Peter Lely. After Lely's death in 1680, Wissing portraits gained pre-eminent status at the court of Charles II. In 1685, James II of England sent Wissing to the Netherlands to paint the portraits of his Dutch son-in-law and daughter, the future William III of England and the future Queen Mary II of England.
