by Holbein, Hans

Holbein's charming portrait of a boy, engraved by Bartolozzi. "Francis Russel E :of Bedford some time After", accompanied by biographical text page.

An example of Holbein's fine portraiture, this is a stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi R.A. (1727-1815) who named himself "Historical Engraver to his Majesty George III". Bartolozzi was one of the finest of all engravers and perfected the art of stippled engraving. In 1768 Francesco Bartolozzi was a foundation member of the Royal Academy in London.

This fine portrait engraving was printed on tissue, laid on heavier paper for publication as “Imitations of Original Drawings by Hans Holbein, in the collection of His Majesty, for the portraits of illustrious persons of the court of Henry VIII” by Hans Holbein (the Younger) (1497-1543). Published in London circa 1796 by the Keeper of the King’s Drawings and Medals and Fellow of the Society of Artists, John Chamberlaine.

The tissue has a horizontal split from the left margin and a faintly discernible diagonal crease across lower left corner, but is quite clean and would still look good framed. This page has been cropped to 46 x 35.5 cm (18 x 14 inches). Engraved border measures 26 x 17.5 cm (10.25 x 7 inches). To plate mark measures 32.5 x 23.5 cm (12.75 x 9.25 inches). Engraved paper size is 37 x 26.5 cm (14.5 x 10.5 inches).
