by John Tallis & Company

Antique print of Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons, Commander of HMS Agamemnon.

Fine original steel engraving of a British Naval Battle with Rear-Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons, First Baron Lyons, GCB, GCMG, KCH (1790-1823), in command of flagship, the new screw steam ship-of-the-line, Agamemnon. finely engraved, with the main scene further embellished below by twined foliage supporting flags and arm raised in victorious salutes. This style of engraving is representative of the distinctive flamboyant presentation of the Tallis publishing house. From 1853 a new partnership was formed between John Tallis and Emphraim Tipton Brain when they set up the London Printing & Publishing Company.

Great naval battle scenes fought by the British Navy have always been collectable. Their finely engraved main subjects were made even more appealing by the additional border of related subjects. They were printed in black and white, but the addition of fine later hand-colour certainly adds to their collectability.
