Crimean War, First Landing of the Royal Horse Artillery in the Bosphorus.

Text on the reverse states ".. scene from real life, which we are enabled to present to our readers by aid of the pencil of an Artillery officer. It is a memorable incident..  The nearest ship is the Mercia.. In the distance is the view of the Bosphorus, taken from the landing place; on the right, at the foot of the hills, is the barrack Koolleli, given over by the Turkish Government for the Royal Artillery.. The view from this point, looking westward towards Stamboul [now Istanbul], or eastward to the Black Sea, after having brought despatches from the fleet of the bombardment of Odessa, and repaired some slight damage which she received from the fire of the Russian guns." There follows a couple of columns (incomplete) of text on "The Bombardment of Odessa".

Original engraving published on June 3, 1854 in The Illustrated London News, the world's first graphic newspaper. The Illustrated London News was a popular publication, with illustrated news of events and discoveries from around the world. The engraved illustrations widely improved circulation of the publication as they could be appreciated by lesser educated people who cut them out, coloured them and attached them to their walls for further enjoyment.
