Fine engraved portrait with the exquisitely engraved border, engraved by W.T. Ryall from the original portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds in the collection of His Grace, the Duke of Bedford. Published circa 1854 by the London Printing and Publishing Company.

John Tallis established a publishing house that was to gain an enviable reputation for the printing of finely engraved and very decorative maps and prints. Using intricately engraved borders to surround  the subject matter, and adding further detail of small 'vignettes' of related subjects, John Tallis became renowned for the quality of his publications. Succeeding his father in the business, he first partnered his brother and expanded to New York. In 1853 John Tallis partnered Ephraim Tipton Brain to form The London Printing and Publishing Company.

The embellished engravings by john Tallis & Co. have always been revered for their exquisite execution, and have often been hand-coloured to further enhance the detail.
