Crispijn Van Der Passe, the Younger, was from a prominent family of Utrecht engravers. Antoine de Pluvinel (1555-1620) was taken to Italy at the ago of 11 to study horsemanship under the celebrated Italian riding master, Giovanni Battista Pignatelli. In1594 Pluvinel founded the French school of horsemanship, the Acadèmide d'Équitation.

Instruction of the King in the Exercise of Horse Riding was Pluvinel's major work, first published in 1625 and reissued in 1709. This engraving is from the First Edition  - with slight printer's flaw towards the top right corner of the engraving. It was published in 1625 (with later hand-colour.) Appointed to the position of Principal Squire of Her Majesty, Pluvinel held an important position in the court of France.

This engraving is 310 x 410mm (12 1/4 x 16 1/4 inches). Page size is 380 x 475mm (15 x 18 3/4 inches).
