'Canal of Dort' beautiful engraving from Cuyp oil painting.
Dort is the name that was used by the English for Dortrecht in south-Holland province. Ancient Dutch capital, major trade port, and oldest city in Holland.

Original copperplate engraving by James Fittler (1758-1835), from a painting by Dutch artist Aelbert Cuyp. Published in London by William Miller in 1808 with later watercolour hand-tinting. This was the first time this famous scene was published as an engraving. Miller was a fine publisher who retired in 1812. 

The horizontal lines across the image have been created by the scanner. It is a fine engraving, with very slight age discolouration. Engraved page size: 32 x 42 cm (12.5 x 16.5 inches) If you'd like a scan of a section of the sky please ask.
