Original steel engraving engraved by Fitzer after a drawing by Blanchard for a revised edition of Oeuvres completes de Buffon (Complete works of Buffon) by M. Richard, Professor of Faculty of Medicine in Paris, and published by Pourrat Brothers in Paris c.1837 (later colour)  Between 1749 and 1788 George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1708-1788) published Histoire Naturelle, Generale et Particuliere avec la Description du Cabinet du Roi, intended to encompass the natural world and to catalogue King Louis XV’s ‘cabinet of curiosities’.
