Beautiful steel engraving by Paquien from the drawing of Travies, for Oeuvres complètes de Buffon, suivies de la classification comparée de Cuvier, Lesson etc. (The Complete works of Buffon, with Linnaean nomenclature and classification of Cuvier, Lesson etc.) printed in Paris by Lamoureux and published c1855 by Garnier brothers.

This is one of the lovliest engravings we have seen of this group of mammals. Finely engraved on steel, with coloured animals enhanced with watercolour, against black and white background. This print is slightly foxed, but it seems to be more obvious on the scanned image than it is on the actual engraving. 10.5 x 6.75inches (approx. 26.5 x 17 cm)
