Original (hand-coloured) wood engraving after a sketch by Braune for a zoological encyclopediaIllustrirtes Tierleben by Alfred Edmund Brehm (1829-1884). First published in Leipzig between 1864 and 1869, it was republished in Austria circa 1896 as Brehm’s Tierleben (Life of Animals). In 1894 it was republished by Frederick Warne and Company of London & New York for “The Royal Natural History” by Richard Lydekker B.A., F.G.S., F.Z.S., Etc. (sic.). 

This lovely engraving has a lined background, that is not as prominent as in this scanned image.

This engraving is mounted in 50 mm wide archival board and covered with cellophane for protection. The actual image measures 135 x.140 mm (5.25 x 5.5 inches).
