Spiders. Aranea Order of Entomology. Spider antique print c1808.

by Rees, Abraham

Great antique print of Spiders c1808.

Original copperplate engraving of spiders by Milton, for The New Cyclopaedia; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature, published in London by Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orme circa 1808, (with later hand-colour).

A Presbyterian clergyman and scholar, Abraham Rees (1743-1825) was undoubtedly inspired to produce his encyclopedia during the many years he was revising Chamber’s Cyclopaedia. Rees compiled a completely new encyclopedia, published in London in parts between 1802 and 1820. Initially published by Longman and Rees, different publishers assisted during the period of publication of the enormous work, comprising 39 volumes of text and 6 volumes of illustrations which included an atlas, one volume on natural history, and four volumes on agriculture, geology, the remaining sciences, foreign exploration, technology and the arts.

Rees commissioned foremost artists and scientific experts in each field, and the illustrations were printed separately from their text. Rees’s encyclopedia was entirely hand-set, and each engraving was printed on ‘hand-wove’ paper from an engraved plate. It was the most comprehensive, all-encompassing literary work of the 19th century.
