Landing of Frederick V at Gravesend.. to marry the Princess Elizabeth, 1612

by The Illustrated London News

"One of the most important matrimonial events in our history, as from it proceeded the dynasty, selected and sanctioned by Parliamentary authority, which now occupies the throne." Frederick V, Elector Palatine, arrived at Gravesend in England on 16th October 1612, for his Marriage to the Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King James I, who became Princess of Prussia, and Queen of Bohemia (and most likely departed from this same port after her marriage). From a picture by A. Willaertts, the Property of Her Majesty.

Original wood engraving (with later hand-colour) after the painting by Adam Willaertts, an artist of considerable repute, who was born at Antwerp in 1577, and died at Utrecht in 1640. During her residence at The Hague, the Princess patronized Willaertts as an artist. The original painting was brought from Holland around the date of the publication of this engraving, and was purchased by her Majesty.

"The Illustrated London News" periodical was the world's first graphic newspaper. Set up in 1842 by Herbert Ingram, management ultimately passed to other members of his family. It was a popular publication, with illustrated news of events and discoveries from around the world. Hundreds of thousands of copies of each edition were published, and the engraved illustrations were avidly collected and coloured for further enjoyment.

Page size is 40 x 27cm (approximately 16 x 11 inches)
