Boswell's is considered one of the finest portrayals of Samuel Johnson and his circle. He reveals not only Johnson's finer points, but also his eccentric behaviour. The book is both humorous and moving; revealing Johnson's pompousness as well as his vulnerability. At the age of 22, after moving from Scotland to London, Boswell met Samuel Johnson and formed a lasting friendship with this great man of letters.
It has been referred to as the best biography in the English language. Although it is a pity this is only Volume I, it is fortunate that it is the first volume.
