The mediaeval name for the Monument of Lysicrates. Lysicrates built the Lantern with Corinthian columns and tripod on top, to award competitive excellence in dancing, music and entertainment. The Lantern was named after Demosthenes, the Athenian orator and statesman of 4th century BC.

Original copperplate engraving for “Middleton’s Complete System of Geography” which included ethnography and architecture as well as topography, published in London circa 1777-1778 by Charles Theodore Middleton.

Page measures 23 x 36cm (9 x 14 inches). Measurement of engraving to plate mark, 19 x 24cm (7.5 x 9.5 inches).
