The British Admiralty approved publication of Cook's first voyage, Endeavour journal in 1773, together with the journals of Joseph Banks and earlier Pacific explorers in a volume edited by John Hawkesworth. An Account of the Voyages Undertaken by order of His present Majesty, for Making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, and Successively Performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook became one of the most popular works of the eighteenth century.
