Antique print of War Canoe of New Zealand. The canoe has stips of foliage hanging from the head of the canoe, as the worldwide sign of peace. Fifty Maori warriors accompanied the Maori King on board the royal canoe.
Original copperplate engraving by La Veau for the 1774 French edition of the voyages of Captain Cook, after the sketch by Sydney Parkinson (c1745-1771) for the first publication in 1773 of John Hawkesworth’s Account of Cook’s Voyages. Parkinson was employed by Joseph Banks on Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific.
This engraving is in fine condition on thick hand-laid paper with two vertical folds as issued. Page size is 260 x 415mm (10.1/4 x 16.3/8 inches). Image size is 195 x 335 mm (7.5/8 x 13.1/8 inches).
