Tahiti Island of Huaheine. Ewharra. Pandanus? Antique print c1780

by Cook, Captain James

View in the Island of Huaheine, and of the Ewharra-no-Eatua, or House of God.

Original rare copperplate engraving of what is probably a Pandanus near the water's edge. The original wash and watercolour drawing of this scene by John James Barralet was done in 1772 for Hawkesworth's Account of Captain Cook's Voyages, published in London circa 1773.

The British Admiralty approved publication of Cook's Endeavour journal in 1773, together with the journals of Joseph Banks and earlier Pacific explorers in a volume edited by John Hawkesworth. An Account of the Voyages Undertaken by order of His Present Majesty, for Making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, and Successively Performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook became one of the most popular works of the eighteenth century.
