by John Tallis & Company

Fine Tallis engraving of the surrender of two sons of the 'Tiger of Mysore', Tipu Sultan. Below the main image is an engraving of the Attempt to Assassinate Lord Cornwallis, March 5, 1791. There is also a military figure engraved at base, each side of this.

Finely engraved decorative Tallis antique print of the defeated sons of scholar, soldier, poet, and devout Moslem, The Tiger of Mysore, Tipu Sultan (1750-1799) who became ruler of the south Indian Sultanate of Mysore following the death of his father in 1782. He was involved in four Anglo-Mysore wars with Britain between 1766 and 1799.

This is a fine original steel engraving by J. Rogers from the painting by H. Singleton, published in London circa 1856 by the London Printing & Publishing Company (previously Tallis & Co.) British battle scenes have always been collectable. As with many of these early engravings, hand-colour has been added at a later date to further enhance the image.

This image is much brighter in the actual engraving. There is slight soiling as is to be expected of an engraving this old. This foxing does not detract from this wonderful engraving. Page size is 18 x 27cm (7 x 10.5 inches). The main engraving measures 11 x 16cm (4.25 x 6.25 inches).
