Antique print of Hindu custom of Sati (Suttee) - in which a Hindu widow died on her husband's funeral pyre. (The practice of Sati was abolished by the British in 1829.)

Original fine steel engraving by J. Redaway after the drawing by Capt. Grindlay when he was in India from the age of 17, between 1804 and 1820. This fine engraving for Robert Elliot, R.N.'s Views of India, China, and the Shores of the Red Sea, was published in London circa 1844 by Fisher, Son & Co. - by permission of Captain Robert Melville Grindlay (1786-1877) from his "Scenery, Costumes and Architecture chiefly on the Western Side of India" which Grindlay had published in 1826.
