Antique print of Naruse Gensiro, Officer of First Class to Ambassadors on first Japanese embassy visit to the United States of America, sent to Washington in 1860 as the first of the series of embassies specially sent abroad by the Tokugawa shogunate.

Small original hand-coloured lithograph by Thomas S. Wagner, lithographer, 38 Hudson Street, Philadelphia, for China and Japan: Being a narrative of the Cruise of the U.S. Steam-frigate Powhatan which described their voyage from Japan to America and their reception on arrival and their experiences, and a description of the Empire of Japan, Japanese land, life, culture and trade.

Aged paper with slight off-setting from print on adjoining page. Size, 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches (19 x 11.5cm).
