Original steelengraving by James Tingle after the sketch by Samuel Thomas (S.T.) Gill(1818-1880) for Victoria Illustrated published Melbourne circa 1857. At21, Gill migrated from London to South Australia. He tried his luck on thegoldfields but had more success with his character studies of life on thegoldfields. He then moved to Victoria to pursue his painting and drawing ofcolonial life in Australia.
