Valley of the Goulburn, Victoria. Antique Print. Australia c1874.

by Prout, John Skinner

Antique Print of the beautiful Goulburn district in Victoria c1874.

Fine original steel engraving by James Baylie Allen (1803-1876), after a sketch of the view by prominent English landscape artist, John Skinner Prout (1805-1876) for Edwin Carton Booth's Australia, Illustrated, with Drawings by Skinner Prout, Chevalier, Armytage and others, published in England circa 1874 by Virtue & Co. This series of views are quite collectable, as lovely records of places that has been considerably changed by development over the years.

Skinner Prout was born in Plymouth, England, and in 1840, arrived in Sydney with his wife and seven children. In January 1844 Prout moved to Hobart and commenced drawing Hobart and its environs for a series of lithographs. He went on many sketching trips throughout NSW, TAS and VIC, often accompanying sketching clubs that he helped to organize. Prout and his family returned to England in April 1848.

This antique print has fine hand-colour (since publication), and is in good condition except for a few tiny marks. It has wide margins outside the image, as published. The size of the page is 210 x 270cm (8 1/4 x 10 5/8 inches). Engraving measures 120 x 178mm (4 3/4 x 7 inches).
